Bookmark and Share

A sprained shoulder is stretching and or tearing of ligaments that stabilize the shoulder. Remember R-I-C-E Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevate.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Rest your shoulder and avoid using or moving your shoulder
2   Apply ice or a cold pack to the elbow for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, 3-4 times a day for 2-3 days to help reduce pain and swelling
3   To reduce inflammation and pain take some ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol)
4   Wear a sling or brace to immobilize your arm and shoulder
5   Make sure to see a medical professional as a cast or splint may be required for 2-3 weeks
Warnings
DO NOT apply ice directly to the elbow, make sure you wrap it in a cloth
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Make sure to seek medical evaluation of the shoulder injury to rule out a broken bone
In some cases surgery may be needed to repair a ligament that is torn completely
