Tailbone Injury
Bookmark and Share

A tailbone or coccyx injury can occur from serious trauma to the rear end such as from a fall or motor vehicle accident. If bladder and/or bowel control is affected, go to the nearest ER immediately.

Symptoms

Steps
1   When sitting on a hard surface try to alternate sitting on each side of the buttocks and lean forward and direct your weight away from the tailbone.
2   Apply ice to the tailbone area for 15-20 minutes, four times a day, for the first few days after the injury.
3   Use ibuprofen or a similar pain medicine, as directed on the label for pain control.
4   If symptoms persist for more than 1 week, or increase in severity, consult medical advice.
Warnings
Avoid sitting down for a long period of time
Make sure the person is not allergic to ibuprofen
Tips
You can purchase a "doughnut" cushion or pillow to sit on as it has a hole in the middle of it to prevent the tailbone from contacting a flat surface
