Tendinitis (Tendonitis)
Bookmark and Share

Tendinitis is the inflammation and irritation of tendons, the fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to bones.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Stop what you're doing and rest the injured area until the swelling has subsided.
2   Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen (if allergic to ibuprofen) as directed every 4 to 6 hours with the onset of symptoms.
3   Apply an ice pack or ice in a towel for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off every 2 hours for 24 - 48 hours.
4   Compress the swollen area by wrapping it in an elastic bandage, ace bandage or athletic tape to limit movement and reduce swelling, allowing the tendons to rest.
5   Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart to reduce internal bleeding and swelling.
6   Drink lots of water
7   If symptoms persist for more than a week or increase in severity, seek medical attention.
Warnings
DO NOT put ice directly onto the skin
If injury doesn't respond to self-treatment in two weeks, see a physician
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Compression and immobilizing is important so don't put too much weight on it
Go to a physical therapist to get some good stretches as this will help get rid of some of the pain, and prevent a future injury.
