Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is a rare, life-threatening illness that is caused by toxins that circulate in the bloodstream. The toxins are released by some strains of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and/or Streptococcus pyogenes. It can cause failure of multiple organ systems in the body. It can occur after a trauma to the skin, pharynx, or vagina (the most common cause being prolonged tampon exposure).

Symptoms

Steps
1   Call 911 or take the person to the nearest hospital.
2   Maintain an open airway, monitor breathing, and circulation. Perform CPR if necessary.
3   Keep the person laying down.
4   Keep the person comfortable while covering them enough to prevent body heat loss.
Warnings
Get medical attention immediately
Tips
Look for other symptoms like a fever, blotchy rash, and an area of infected skin that is red, swollen, and painful
