Traveler's Diarrhea
Bookmark and Share

Traveler's diarrhea occurs when people travel from industrialized countries to developing countries. They become ill from eating or drinking food or water contaminated by infected human bowel waste.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Drink 2-3 quarts of fluid per day. In the first 24 hours, the best fluids to drink are bottled fruit juices and beverages, hot tea, and broth.
2   In the next 24 hours, eat bland foods such as rice, soup, bread, crackers, eggs, and cereals. Advance to regular foods after 2-3 days.
3   Use over-the-counter medications, with more severe cases, which may help reduce symptoms and shorten the time they last.
Warnings
Try to drink as much fluid then you think is coming out with the diarrhea
Avoid dairy, greasy, sugary, and high fiber foods
Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks
Tips
Gatorade is great but dilute it with water as it has too much sugar and can worsen diarrhea
Immodium can give the stools more consistency and provide some relief from your symptoms
Pepto-Bismol is also moderately effective
