Bookmark and Share

Weeverfish are colorful fish that are usually found buried in the sand or mud. The most common mode of injury is by stepping on buried fish or contact with the spine of the fish by anglers. Even when dead, weeverfish can cause a serious wound from spines containing a neurotoxin venom and they can cause death.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Reassure and keep the person calm.
2   Use tweezers to remove any spines in the wound because symptoms may not go away until all spines have been removed.
3   Immerse the affected area in water as hot as the person can tolerate for 30-90 minutes. Repeat as necessary to control pain.
4   Scrub the wound with soap and water followed by extensive rinsing with fresh water.
5   Apply hydrocortisone cream 2-3 times daily as needed for itching and discontinue immediately if any signs of infection appear.
6   Monitor for reduced level of consciousness, breathing and circulation. Perform CPR if necessary.
7   If symptoms persist or increase in severity, seek medical attention promptly.
Warnings
DO NOT cover the wound with tape.
Tips
Immersing the affected area using vinegar as hot as the person can take instead of water has been shown to work better
Oral antibiotics are recommended for infection
