Whiplash is a common neck injury associated with a sudden distortion of the neck, often occurring during motor vehicle accidents, and fall from bicycles or horses; and even in extreme head banging. These extreme motions push your neck muscles and ligaments beyond their normal range of motion.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Call 911.
2   Reassure and keep the person calm.
3   DO NOT move the person unless absolutely necessary. Always suspect a head/neck injury, particularly when there is pain the in the neck or back.
4   Monitor the person’s level of consciousness, breathing and circulation. Perform CPR if necessary.
5   Go to the nearest ER to have the injury checked.
6   If there are no obvious problems during the incident, watch for symptoms within the next 2 weeks. These include pain or stiffness in the neck, back or shoulders.
7   Apply an ice pack to the injured area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
8   See your doctor as soon as possible to determine extent of whiplash.
Warnings
DO NOT apply ice directly to the skin
Tips
Wrap a folded towel around the neck to help hold the head in one position during the night
